Live-in vs Live-out Nanny in Nairobi: How to Choose

Compare schedules, accommodation, commuting and privacy to decide which nanny arrangement is a better fit for your family.

Published

What is the difference?

A live-in nanny stays in accommodation provided by the household, while a live-out nanny travels to and from work for agreed shifts. Neither arrangement is automatically the better choice: the right fit depends on your childcare schedule, home setup and the expectations both sides can agree to.

Families sometimes assume that living in means being available at all times. It does not remove the need to agree on working hours, rest periods, days off, privacy and responsibilities. Clear boundaries protect the family’s routine and the employee’s ability to rest.

When a live-in arrangement may suit

A live-in arrangement may be practical when childcare starts early, finishes late or involves a schedule that is difficult to cover with a commute. It can also help when a family wants consistent support around school routines or needs to discuss occasional schedule changes.

Consider whether your home has suitable private accommodation and whether everyone is comfortable sharing the household. Discuss access to shared spaces, visitors, meals, privacy, time off and what happens when the family travels. These details are better settled before a placement than during a disagreement.

When a live-out arrangement may suit

A live-out nanny may be a good option when the family needs support during predictable daytime hours and values a clear separation between work and home. It can suit households that do not have appropriate staff accommodation or prefer not to have a live-in arrangement.

Commute time and transport reliability matter, particularly for early starts or late finishes. Agree on working hours, punctuality expectations, communication if travel is disrupted and the process for any extra hours. Build a practical handover into the daily schedule.

Compare the arrangements before deciding

Write down your actual weekly childcare needs, including school runs, evenings, weekends and likely schedule changes. Then discuss those needs with candidates and compare the arrangements they are willing and able to accept. Be transparent about the home environment and essential duties.

Whatever you choose, agree on compensation, hours, rest time, days off, duties, privacy and emergency procedures in writing. Check current Kenyan employment requirements and clarify how schedule changes will be handled. A fair, realistic agreement is more useful than choosing an arrangement based on assumptions.
